The Do’s & Don’ts of Wedding Venue Searching

The Do’s & Don’ts of Wedding Venue Searching
Finding the wedding venue is one of the first things that couples usually check off their wedding planning list and as it’s often where a lot of the budget goes.  It’s really important for you to make sure your venue lives up to everything you dreamed of and that you are able to do everything that you want there. In today’s post I’ve put together a few “Do’s” and “Don’ts” to help make finding your dream venue easier.
Happy Planning!
Joy x

Do begin with discussing this important starter question; Civil Ceremony, Church wedding or even a jet setting destination wedding. Knowing the kind of ceremony you want plays a big part in your venue choice.

Do decide if you’d like everything all in one place or how far you are willing to travel between venues.

Don’t forget about that budget! Keep it mind and try to stick to it.
Do think about the kind of style you’re after. Is it big rustic barn, a boutique hotel, a stately home, an outdoor marquee or tipi or a blank canvas village hall?
Do ask about capacity, you might not know exactly how many guests you’d like to invite initially, but if that cute village hall only accommodates 50 and you’ve got roughly 70 guests in mind, you might need to reconsider.
Don’t rule out having your wedding day on a weekday or not during peak season. Some venues offer discount for these dates, which is perfect if you’re on a tighter budget.

Don’t forget about your guests, the day is of course about you but it’s good to keep in mind where people are traveling from and if it’s going to be easy for them to get to your chosen venue.

Do make sure you check out the parking situation. Is there enough room for all your guests and check if cars can be left over night?

Do get out there and see the venues for yourselves and get a feel for the place. Many venues hold wedding open days where you can see the venue all dressed to impress and also speak to other local wedding suppliers.
Don’t forget to find out about accommodation. Are there rooms available for you and your guests on site or are there hotels and B&Bs near by?
Do ask to see a full break down of costs. Make sure you know what is included in the price do you have to pay for any extras such as corkage, chairs and tables, crockery etc

Do consider hiring an on the day coordinator, certainly if your venue is a blank canvas such as a marquee or barn. The idea of dressing your venue hours before the wedding might seem feasible but and extra pair of hands will sure take the pressure off. It’s also someone to take control of the day, in the absence of a venue manager.

Don’t forget the weather! If you’re having an outdoor wedding do you have alternative options if the heavens open? Does your wedding venue offer the option of an outdoor ceremony if the sun is shining?
Do check out the venues recommended suppliers not only for inspiration and to help with your other planning stages but also find out if you are tied to using them.

Do find out who your point of contact is in the run up to and on the big day itself. It’s nice to know there’s someone at the end of the phone when you need them and also knows the ins and outs of your wedding when the day arrives.

Don’t assume you can do anything you like décor-wise. Make sure you find out what you can and can’t do. Some venues might not allow hanging decorations, candles or confetti so it’s worth asking about.
Do ask about the venues policy on loud music and when the wedding has to end. *sob sob*
Finding your perfect wedding venue is a huge chunk of your wedding planning sorted and once you know when and where your big day is going to be you can really start to shape your day. After all that searching you might be quite worn out so I suggest sticking the kettle on, putting your feet up and giving yourselves a high five!

The Ultimate Newly Engaged Checklist

Image Credit: Jose Villa for the The Mrs Box

The question has been asked, the ring is on your finger, you’re both over the moon and basking in love and overwhelming happiness and I should hope that some champagne was popped at some point too! That’s right, you’re engaged! But what next? To save you from slipping into a wedding planning whirlwind I’ve put together the ultimate checklist for newly engaged couples. From the fun and exciting to the sensible and practical, this is the go to list for when you’ve just said, “YES!”

Happy Planning!

Joy x

1.  Tell the World!

Once you’re over the shock and it’s sunk in that you’re getting married to your beau, there’s no doubt that you’ll want to tell the other loved ones in your lives’ too. Whether it’s a phone call, a surprise ‘we’re engaged’ card, a series of intimate celebrations or a big get together to celebrate, everyone will be overjoyed to hear your news! Be prepared to relive and tell your engagement story more than once. When, where, how? Did you cry? Did you know? Have you set a date…? Marriage is such a wonderful event that everyone will want to hear all the details. Embrace this moment and don’t feel pressured into making any decisions, this is your time. Enjoy it!

2.  The Rock

You’ll most likely find yourself very aware of your new engagement ring. Playing with it, checking its still there, staring at it as it twinkles in the sunlight and the talking with your hands will be taken to whole new level! First things first, a few practicalities... get it insured! Although it’s irreplaceable, it’s something that makes good practical sense if the worst was ever to happen. Also, make sure the ring fits. Brownie points if he got your size right! Re-sizing doesn’t take a lot of time at all and you’ll usually have your sparkler back within a week or so ready to show off! In the meantime, why not treat yourself to a manicure or a luxurious hand cream? Those hands will be getting a lot of attention so who can say no to a spot of pampering?

3.  Dates for your Diary

In the very early stages of wedding planning there’s no immediate rush to set a date but it’s always good to have an idea of when you’d like your wedding to be. Do you fancy a Spring, Summer or maybe a Winter wedding? Are there any dates that are special to you both? Do you want a long or short engagement? It’s also worth noting that weddings out of season or on a weekday can often be cheaper than those on let’s say, a Saturday in August.

4.  Money Talks

Ah, the budget! It plays a huge part in wedding planning so it’s best to get on to the subject of money nice and early! Initially you should think about how much you want to spend and how much you can realistically save in the time you have and also if any family members will be contributing. At this stage you won’t know exactly how much your bridal bouquet or wedding dress will be and that’s ok. If you know you only want to spend X amount then that’s the budget you’ll work to and you can split up the budget further along the line. Always add in a little extra as a contingency, as the day draws nearer there will be little things you may have forgotten to account for – stamps for wedding invitations is always one!

                5. Be Inspired

Perhaps one of the most exciting and overwhelming parts of planning a wedding is choosing a style or theme. With so much inspiration our there it can be hard to choose, especially if you find yourself open to a range of ideas. Before leaping into a sea of pin boards on Pinterest, I’d recommend looking a little closer to home, after all your wedding day should represent you as a couple. What kind of style are you drawn to already? Have you traveled together? Do enjoy a certain type of food? What are your favourite colours or Eras? Does your ideal wedding venue lend itself to a certain style? Once you’ve chatted through your initial thoughts and ideas, then resources like Pinterest and wedding blogs will be a great place for inspiration. Don’t get hung up on your wedding not having a precise theme, just keep a few words or colours in mind and it’ll all come together.

6.  Priorities in Check

Firstly, let me assure you that there is no need to do everything at once! That’s a sure fire way to end up in a wedding planning meltdown! Instead make a list of all the elements of a wedding… Venue, catering, Photographer, Dress, Flowers, Styling, Transport, Stationery... Then have a honest discussion about the things that mean the most to you and start at the top. Where are you willing to invest a little more of the budget, where might you do a spot of DIY or what might you leave out completely? Be sure to book key suppliers early on to avoid disappoint. Many wedding suppliers can book up a year in advance, so if that photographer is on the top of your wish list, make that your priority.

So there we have it, the ultimate checklist for newly engaged couples! I hope that it has made things a little less daunting for you! If you need any help at any stage during your wedding planning, you know where I am.

Unique Wedding Planning / Unique Ideas / Wedding Favors / Inspiration

Unique Wedding Planning / Wedding Favors / Unique Ideas

Wedding Favors are a fantastic way of creating more to talk about on your special day! People think that wedding favors are limited to a small box of confectionery, this is not the case!

Favors are a great way of showing your appreciation to your guests on your big day and there are so many things you can do!

Even if you’re wanting to take the confectionery route why not do something different such as cakes or cookies? They can be made into a real feature on the table and boxed to look amazing.

I have also found a collection of personalized gifts. A bonus to these is that they are something that guests can take home and are something for them to keep and remember your day.

 Not forgetting the kids!
Weddings are extremely long days for children and they can end up becoming extremely restless, it is often a good idea to give the kinds something to do as a wedding favor. I have found some really good ideas which should keep them entertained and occupied.

I have managed to gain so many fantastic ideas from  using Pinterest, the images I have used I have gathered from there too!

Take a look at my account and Follow me on Pinterest

Enjoy! x

Unique Wedding Planning / Bespoke Wedding planning / Bespoke Services / Wentworth Castle Gardens

Unique Wedding Planning Bespoke Services

I have had two weddings this week & both have taken place at the stunning Wentworth Castle Gardens, with each couple receiving a unique & bespoke service.  They had completely different needs, with one requiring an on the day coordination marquee service & one needing full wedding planning support

Gemma and James were married on the 13th April. I met them two years ago at a wedding show, & since this time, they’ve been busy, planning their big day – on the day, all they wanted was to sit back & enjoy it, without the stress of worrying about the coordination too
They had a fabulous marquee, which I set up in the morning, then I was on-hand to make sure that everything ran to plan – it was all perfect.. all except for the wind!
I hope they enjoyed their day as much as I did- the first time I looked at my watch, I’d been there 11 hours!

Congratulations to the new Mr and Mrs Shaw!

Emma and James were married on the 19th April.  I met them just over a year ago and have worked with them on every aspect of their wedding – we went dress shopping & cake-tasting (the best bits!) & I helped them find all the rest of their suppliers & then coordinated the actual day for them.  It’s so rewarding to see everything come together!
Emma and James had a full wedding planning service & part of their brief was to have a Civil Ceremony, followed by an intimate blessing, again, something totally unique.  I produced a mood board at the start of our time together & can’t wait to show you how the professional images reflect this!

Again, I hope they enjoyed their day as much as I did - it just flew by and was amazing to be a part of it!
Congratulations to the new Mr and Mrs Mills!

Thank-you to some wonderful suppliers that have made this week’s weddings possible!

Trends for 2012

The Garden Theme

I've noticed that the ‘Garden’ theme is predicted to be one of the major trending features of 2012 weddings & has been featured heavily in lots of Spring Wedding Shows…

Weddings have always had links to nature: beauty and romance and flowers have been brought indoors as a key decoration and focal point of many ceremonies, but now the emphasis is beginning to focus on taking the inside out......and why not?

That’s how you get the best of both – the comfort and style of indoor living and the freedom of the outdoors. It’s a modern twist on an age old tradition, and looking at pictures like these I can see how the idea will inspire many weddings this year:

If these ideas seem slightly fantastical, or just too much like hard work for you, don’t forget that by hiring a Wedding Planner the extra pair of hands will go a very long way. Their job is to ensure that your day is as stress free and enjoyable for you as possible.

There is the contemptuous British weather to contend with, which will always be a match for any Wedding Planner, but there are many ways to incorporate this theme into your wedding which are (almost) weather-proof... Talk to Unique about the venues where this is all possible ....

Sarah & Tony: Dore Church & Thornbridge Hall

Sarah & Tony: 28th May 2011: The Best of Both Worlds (& a bit more!)

First off all, I make no apologies for the longer than normal Blog & the more than usual amount of images...I just couldn't choose...So enjoy!

I first met Sarah & Tony on a very dreary November day at an extremely dreary Wedding Fayre.
I was soon jolted awake by Tony, who being a man who says what he thinks, told me in no uncertain terms what he though of me not replying to his emails! Well...lucky for me, it wasn't me ... It doesn't matter who it was, because as it turned out, it was a really great ice-breaker!

You can't imagine how disappointed I was (read devastated!!), when they had to leave. Their young daughter who less than impressed with the Fayre, decided it was time for them to go.... and they'd just started telling me about their wedding, planned for the following May at one of my very favourite venues, Thornbridge Hall! Thornbridge is just one of those places that I instantly fell in love with. When I first started Unique, I did lots of market research on many venues & I knew that I always wanted to work at there, as for many reasons, it falls top of most of my lists..

I was absolutely thrilled (& glad I wasn't on Skype!), when Tony called the following February, to say that they would like some support with their final wedding plans. For couples who are having a large wedding or holding it an unusual venue, involving many suppliers, it is normally within 4-6 months of the big day that they will request some help with the completion of their planning. My Best of Both Worlds Package is designed with this in mind & can be adapted to suit each couples needs.

I arranged to meet them at their home & we covered all the planning that they had done to date & talked about what was left to do. This included sourcing all the outstanding suppliers, building a plan that managed them all, setting up the venue the day before the wedding & then coordinating all the elements on the actual day, including the set up at the church.

From this, I put together a proposal that covered all the above & I'm thrilled to say that they hired me immediately. Over the next few months I met them many times & kept them updated with the plan as it changed, making sure that all the suppliers involved where kept in the loop.

I know from the feedback that I've had from them & the largest box of chocolates ever (yes I did eat all of them!), that they were absolutely thrilled with how their wedding day came together. From my point of view, it was extremely hard work, but an absolute privilege to both to have been a part of such an incredible day & to work with such amazing suppliers at a stunning venue ...What more could a Wedding Planner ask for ?!!

With major thanks to Jo & Simon at http://www.shoot-lifestyle.co.uk/ for capturing the day with totally stunning photography.
To Mat Hepplestone at http://www.redfloral.co.uk/ for the amazing flowers.
And finally to Jackie at http://www.thornbridgehall.co.uk/home.html where there truly is, always something different!

Beccy & James: Christian's at The Beauchief

Beccy & James: 21st May 2011: Outsourcing Service

There were only 3 weeks to go before her wedding when I first met Beccy and on realising that the Events Coordinator she had been dealing with had left, she promptly burst in to tears .... Not a great start I thought! (One of the things that I would always recommend to venues is that when a key member of their planning staff leaves, they need to inform all the couples who that person had been dealing with, to prevent & manage some of the shock!).

I had to work quickly & calmly to ensure that I re-gained Beccy's trust & eliminated any doubts or stress, so near to her big day.

I started by covering a run through of her day and produced an itinerary, detailing everything that needed to happen & at what time. I don't mind admitting (after the event of course), that at this stage, there were some gaps in the plan! There was no white linen, there were definitely not 100 Martini Glasses for the cocktails .... neither was there a clear plan for the marquee required to house the additional guests on the outside terrace.

The point is, by producing the plan & walking through the day, it was easy to identify what was still left to do, what needed ordering & what staff needed to be involved on the day. Beccy & her husband James, were having the works .. a cocktail hour & casino in the bar & VIP area, a sit down wedding breakfast for over 120 people in The Ballroom & marquee & a large evening reception... This meant that at some stage of the celebrations, most of the downstairs areas at Christian's would be used, so this became a team effort.

Well..at the risk of being boring & saying the same thing, it's only by having the plan in place, that everyone is clear (including the couple), what needs to happen to make their dreams come to true on their Wedding Day.

Come the big day, I can honestly say that they had a ball & that Beccy will be remembered as one of the happiest brides that I've ever seen. I had a lovely message afterwards to say thank-you & that their day had been absolutely perfect...

The last 2 posts have been my first weddings using my Outsourcing Service. I hope you've enjoyed reading about them.

I also hope that from a couples perspective, it gives you confidence that with the right people in place, everything can be pulled together... even at short notice. From a venue's perspective, it hopefully gives you an insight as to how sometimes, outside help can be extremely valuable & that having external support, doesn't always mean someone working on the outside of your team

With thanks to Mike Leng for the photography @ http://www.mike-leng.co.uk

Jenny & Jonny: Christian's at The Beauchief

Jenny & Jonny:14th May 2011: My first outsourcing service wedding !

Well, following on from my last post, this was the first chance that I had to put the idea of providing an outsourcing service to a venue, in to action & I couldn't have asked for a nicer couple to work with!

I first met Jenny & Jonny less than 2 weeks before their big day & to say they were nervous of having a new person to manage their wedding at such a late stage would be an understatement! It's such an emotional time for couples, especially in the last few weeks ... (another reason to have a planner that is with you from beginning to end!).

I started by going through with Jenny & Jonny, step by step, how their day was going to run. We covered what suppliers had been booked, what was happening at what time & from the first meeting, I produced a plan of the day, so they were confident that I had everything in hand. Having a detailed plan not only allows the venue to coordinate the whole wedding, it also allows couples to see exactly what they can expect. They can then work through everything & make sure they actually do want things at a certain time or in a certain way! ... Sometimes, it's only by seeing everything in black & white, before the event, that they are able to really think about the flow of their day & question whether it is what you they are trying to achieve.

As I was also working with a completely new team @ Christian's, the pre-planning meetings, utilising the day plan, really enabled them to pull together, with everyone understanding what part they had to play. From a venue's perspective, successful weddings are made by lots of individuals, from all the teams involved, understanding what's needed, being prepared & giving a seamless service on the day...

The end result is that the couple get a fantastic service all round, whether it be from the bar, the kitchen or the coordinator ...

Everyone worked together to ensure that Jenny & Jonny's wedding was a great success & in their own words, in the thank-you that they sent ..Their whole day ran smoothly from start to finish & they couldn't have wished for a better day... :-)

Thanks to Deborah Stone Photography @ http://www.deborahstone.co.uk/ for the images & fabulous album Christian's now has to showcase their weddings & to Kate from Pretty Chairs @ http://www.prettychairs.co.uk/ for the venue styling.
